The Jewish Sabbath (Shabbat) has been practiced beginning at sundown Friday to sundown Saturday for thousands of years. The Prophets and the books of the Law regarded the Sabbath as a Holy Day. That has not changed in 3000+ years.
As far as "Restoring the Sabbath" - that seems to be preached by certain Christian sects in an attempt to change the Christian day of worship to Saturday.
At the same time, in my opinion, the focus should be on a day of rest, honoring God, creation, life, family/friends and spirituality. Debating on "which day" it should be on takes away from the primary focus of what the day means, in my opinion.
The 7 day week dates back to ancient times but the names for the days of the week were adopted during Roman times:
Days named after planets
Greco-Roman tradition
Between the first and third centuries CE, the
Roman Empire gradually replaced the eight-day Roman
nundinal cycle with the seven-day week. The earliest evidence for this new system is a Pompeiian graffito referring to 6 February (
ante diem viii idus Februarias) of the year 60 CE as
dies solis ("Sunday").
Another early witness is a reference to a lost treatise by
Plutarch, written in about 100 CE, which addressed the question of: "Why are the days named after the planets reckoned in a different order from the 'actual' order? The treatise is lost, but the answer to the question is known; see
planetary hours.
The days were named after the classical planets of Hellenistic astrology, in the order:
SUNDAY: Sun (Sol
Helios)
MONDAY - Moon (Luna/
Selene),
TUESDAY - Mars (Marte/Aries)
WEDNESDAY - Mercury (Hermes)
THURSDAY - Jupiter (Jove/Zeus)
FRIDAY - Venus (Aphrodite)
SATURDAY - Saturn (Saturn/Cronus)
English:
- Sunday: (Sun) - Day of the Sun.
- Monday: (Mon) - Moon's Day (from Old English Mōnandæg).
- Tuesday: (Tue/Tues) - Tiw's Day (Norse god of war).
- Wednesday: (Wed) - Woden's Day (Odin, Norse chief god).
- Thursday: (Thu/Thurs) - Thor's Day (Norse god of thunder).
- Friday: (Fri) - Frigg's Day (Norse goddess of love).
- Saturday: (Sat) - Saturn's Day (Roman god/planet).
