Once again, a government project isn't given to PEOPLE, but rather to corporations. It would be cheaper and more effective to give the money to the people and let them build their own housing.

It’s a government program and it’s costing taxpayers $600K for a pre made metal box you see on every freight train.

And ladies and gents...is a GREAT example of how absolutely STUPID and MIND BLOWING wasteful governments are. And to think many people want these same bureaucrats to run our healthcare.
Same thing here locally.
An old school house that was abandoned for about 15 years - the government here had a great idea to convert the building to low income housing.
Received federal grant money...and the project cost just over $2.2 MILLION dollars.
It only created 8 units (was not a big school building). That is $275,000 per unit. WTF????
For that much money those opposed to the idea, and there were plenty, showed the city could have built a 20 unit facility.
But no....

YOUR link:

“There are more than 1,000 units in the HHH pipeline whose cost will exceed $600,000 each, and one project in which the cost per unit tops $700,000, Galperin said in a statement.”

If you'd read the article you'd know that the primary reason for the outrageous costs are non-construction related. They're 'soft' costs for consultants, architects, lawyers etc...AND of course, the profits for the contractors.

If projects like these could be done directly by government workers entirely, the costs would be way less - probably about 25%.

The problem is the capitalist system - we do not allow the government to do projects directly - they have to hire contractors who milk the government for all they can - and pay the workers squat.

But if anyone suggested that the government hire all the workers directly and design everything, Conservatives would be SCREAMING SOCIALISM! SOCIALISM!

Maybe we need to bring back the WPA:

But that would be Soooo Socialist!

You should peek out of your parents basement long enough to get a grip.
Just how many construction engineers/electrical/plumbing/structural engineers do you think work for city governments? And how many skilled contractors do they employ? And heavy equipment?
NONE.
And how much do you think it would cost to employ these 100's of people year round?

How is giving the 600k to each bum cheaper or more effective?

That's doesn't make any sense at all.

$600,000 for A BOX?

They have been specifically manufactured as modular, prefabricated homes because building codes prevent the developer from using recycled containers.
They cost $1,800. After the earthquake New Zealand rebuilt an entire mall with them until the new one could be rebuilt. For $3M.

I bought a shipping container and turned it into a really nice HE shed. And it won't burn down. Purchase, Placement , Plumbing and Electrical as well as other amenities total cost $6,000. that's 1% of their cost. at $600,000 some politicians brother in law's brother is making a Killing, and of course showing his appreciation for receiving the contract. How much engineering does it take to convert a Metal container?

The containers cost $1800.00 the land they out them on is what's expensive . Put them on federal land outside the city/ Run a bus line so they can get to town when they need drugs or have to take a shit!

Just saw part of an episode where a young woman got a small container home...with everything - $18,000. And it was very nice.
Only the government can turn an $18,000 project into $600,000
