Judge States Traditional Marriage Was Polygamy

I don't know where this judge received her information but most people throughout history could not afford more than one spouse and in mot societies it is a one for one pairing. Polygamy or polyandry were done from necessity but were not the norm throughout history.

That judge needs to provide proof on this one.

It's in the Bible. Isn't that proof enough? :eusa_angel:

No, it's not. Try reading a Bible sometime. In the beginning God created man and woman. That was the first marriage so traditionally it's the one we go with, right?

How many wives did Abraham, Jacob and Solomon have? If Adam and Eve were married, who performed the ceremony? :eusa_eh:

The woman is naturally an idiot. Yes, some societies and cultures have polygamy as a traditional form of marriage.
But for 2000 years in the West marriage has been one man and one woman. If 2000 years does not constitute a tradition I am not sure what does.

but not the only tradition, and in the history of mankind, not the dominant tradition

and navyvet's analysis is ignorant

Which point did you have an issue with? Are you under the assumption that polygamy is the predominant tradition in the world? The judge in this case was ignorant.

If polygamy is traditional, why is it not allowed right now? Why has government fought the tradition?

You have made no worthy point to argue. Your analysis of history is wrong.

Good question. The answer seems to be that traditionalists(conservatives) like peeping into peoples' bedrooms.

The minority. There is no proof that polygamy was widespread or the norm. The judge is wrong.

Great comeback. NOT.

Go troll someone else.

I'm not sure what you answer has to do with anything. If this judge is claiming polygamy is traditional then why is it illegal? She should take the next step and legalize polygamy in the state of Wisconsin.

However, what WAS tradition is that the woman had no choice in the relationship and was quite often barely in her teens married to an older man.

Your argument seems specious at best. Polygamy is part and parcel of the Old Testament. Are you saying that doesn't qualify as a tradition?

It is a tradition, yes. But it is not our tradition. Our tradition in Western Europe, of which we are part, is one man one woman. That is a 2000 year old tradition.

Who says OUR tradition is Western Europe? Americans come from all over the world.

Now they do. Historically no. And those that did had to abide by our laws and respect our traditions.

Gays want everyone not only in their bedrooms but under the covers too.

And that is still the norm in many parts of the world, especially the Muslim world.

Yep....of course we are not desirous of following such traditions so we mentally block it out as having BEEN the tradition.

Your silly comment without any supporting evidence except your own wrong opinion was the trollish comment. You will eat it every time you make it.

He technically only had one wife at a time. He had current marriages annulled in order to marry the next contestant or ended with a dead wife, and he had multiple women on the side, but that isn't quite the same thing as being in a polygamous situation, at least from a legal standpoint. The church would never have backed him if he had done otherwise.

Damn you bringing in facts!

Facts require evidence. You're hanging your hat on a mere statement without back up. At the time the church DID NOT enforce monogamy.

Chapter VII. Polygamy.
Yeah that's a big fail right there.
Polygamy is certainly not a western tradition, and not ours. See Reynolds v US.

That's certainly coming.

That's of course as wrong as anything else you've ever posted.

Polygamy was certainly the tradition in the Americas.

Polygamy was certainly the tradition until the conversion to Christianity from 200 to 1200 CE.

The Rabbi, what history are you studying? It is certainly not the Earth's.
