Pop star Michael Jackson is going to have to give a good reason for missing a hearing in a sex abuse suit filed against him in New Orleans federal court.
Jackson failed to materialize Wednesday and Judge Eldon Fallon ordered him to appear Aug. 17 and show cause why he should not be held in contempt, and why a default judgment should not be rendered in the case, the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Thursday.
The lawsuit was filed by Joseph Thomas Bartucci Jr., who claims Jackson kidnapped him from New Orleans in 1984 and held him prisoner for nine days. He claims he was repeatedly sexually assaulted during the ordeal.
Bartucci said the traumatic memory was repressed and came back to him during TV coverage of Jackson's recent child molestation trial in California.
Jackson hired a team of lawyers to represent him in the case, but they withdrew in April and subsequently sued to collect nearly $50,000 they say he owes for legal services.
