Well, if you had bothered to read the very link you provided, you'd understand that the point is basically a rebellion against Korean gender role expectations.

I don't know much about Korean culture, and I really have no idea whether the gender role expectations there are so bad that it warrants drastic measures. But the link does say that it's a radical movement. So there you have it. The point is to be radical, and to that end, mission accomplished.

As for American progressive birthing persons who recently are jumping on the bandwagon, it should be pretty clear. Cultural appropriation is one of the great pastimes of American progressives.
