Around 1908–1911, the borders of Tibet, were actively being defined through the military campaigns and administrative restructuring carried out by
Zhao Erfeng, a Qing dynasty official.
- Context: Following the 1904 British expedition to Tibet and subsequent Anglo-Chinese conventions (1906, 1907) that acknowledged Chinese suzerainty.
- Other Developments: Around this same time, specifically in 1908, a "Map of Tibet" was prepared, incorporating materials from various missionaries (including W.N. Ferguson and E. Amundsen) and traveler reports for the northwestern areas, published in the Atlas of the Chinese Empire.
The famous McMahon Line, often associated with Tibet's borders, was drawn up later, in 1914 by the British.
