It is a place for purification and a guess would suggest very crowded. I base this on a memory of learning as a child the average person commits seven sins a day. Recently I heard that the average American commits three felonies a day. I understand we average about five good deeds a month.

We may disagree here. "Modern" perspectives and commentaries became the vogue in too many places. I found better understanding and logic from those who researched the original meaning/intent of the original authors to their original audience.
