Israeli citizenship, according to Abunimah, does not confer civil rights. You can sit on the Knesset, but your basic rights to (for example) buy land and marry are abrogated.

Well, I don't know about Monte, but apartheid has a formal definition. Its an Afrikaaner word (Afrikaans was the dialect of Dutch that developed in South Africa) for "apartness." That is literally what it means. so apartheid isn't mistreatment or racism or rudeness, what it IS is a legal and social system that keeps two peoples apart formally. It has to do with the inability of one group to buy land, or marry freely, etc. All these laws are designed to preserve the Jewishness of Israel just like the South African version was designed to preserve the whiteness of South Africa ... by keeping the blacks "somewhere else." The American version of apartheid was Jim Crow laws.

Right, Palestinians are restricted from purchasing land in Israel in virtually every case.

There are few loopholes. If you want, do a case study and try to find any instance where an Arab has bought land from a Jew in the last 10 years or so. Real estate tax rolls are public in the U.S., hopefully they would be in Israel, too.

Obviously on the eve of Israeli Independence the vast majority of land was owned by Palestinian Arabs. Their land titles were stripped and that land reverted to the state and thence to the Jewish National Fund. The JNF is specifically prohibited from selling land to non-Jews.

There has been and continues to be a lot of trickery in land purchases from Palestinians. Other times where land is owned by more than one person, if one of the owners is incapacitated, the purchasers will forge their signature and show the other owner that their co-owner has signed away their interest. If that were true the owner's rights have been compromised and they feel an urgent need to get what they can without taking it to court. Land courts almost always find in favor of the Jewish purchasers.
