If Christianity (ancient Judaism) is just “made up” by men, then why did they believe that all the dead go into Sheol (hades), both good and bad people? Wouldn’t you just say that good people go to paradise? If it was just made up, how did they make prophecies that came true? If it’s all a lie, why did so many people choose to die rather than renounce their faith?

Great point. I know a lot of people who credit God for their success. They could be right, even if God doesn't exist. If they did good things and raised good kids in he name of Jesus, and they are happy people because of it, you make a good point my friend.

How do you recommend people begin building love of God within him/herself?

In my opinion it happens when people set their ego aside and allow God to change them, His way and in His time. Those who demand a certain timeframe or dictate how God must do that will usually be disappointed and then declare there is no God.

Some are moved to do that by reading scripture or other JudeoChristian writings, some from hearing the Word preached, some via other means. But I strongly believe that those who genuinely and honestly reach out to God will come to know Him, will come to have a relationship with Him. And only then do they fully understand what that relationship is and the assurance it gives them that there is life beyond this one.
