True.As most people know, "democracy" is simply a catch-all term that is used to describe the ability and authority of the people to vote for what they want. Yes, a "republic" is not the same. A "republic" is a form of democracy in which elected representatives are given the authority to exercise the power given to them by the vote.
So the term "democracy", when used in normal discussion by normal people, can certainly be interpreted as "republic" in context.
The troubling thing here is often the regular dishonest parsing of the term seems to always come from those Americans who prefer something closer to fascism than a democracy or a republic. It's almost as if they're trying to downplay or decay the legitimacy of the vote in favor of pure top-down control of the populace.
Democracy: Mob rule.
Representative democracy: Cooler heads prevail.
