Many of the old laws God gave the ancient Israelites (not just the “Jews” or tribe of Judah) were to test the obedience of them. They failed time and again, as shown many times over in the Old Testament.

The problem with Jews, as was evident with the Pharisees, was they were too caught up in the letter of the law, and forgot what the spirit of the law always intended. This is why Jews even today always tap dance around legal speak and debate the meaning of the words, all while missing the whole point of the law. Hence why some crazy Jews have to use “pre-torn” toilet paper on the Shabbat.
