How did some people monopolize a general word like "holocaust" to make it synonymous with only 20 century history?
The word "holocaust" is a general term, dating back to the Middle Ages. There is no "The" Holocaust. Most (if not all) authoritative dictionaries first define the word "holocaust" generally.
Example: holocaust: "a great or complete devastation or destruction, especially by fire." (1)
Some people used good marketing and access to media to somewhat commandeer the term. This was done in the same way as brand Kleenex used good marketing to make its name synonymous with the word "tissue." Band-Aid used good branding to make its name synonymous with the word "bandage."
