Looking at Ireland next to England reveals a lot about gun control….it doesn’t stop criminals from getting guns

Guns in the Republic of Ireland

Ireland has some of the least permissive firearm legislation in Europe. In order to possess a limited range of hunting and sport-shooting firearms,1 gun owners must renew their firearm certificates every three years.23 Although small arms-related death, injury and crime remain relatively low, rising rates of gun violence and firearm ownership in the Republic ― in particular the possession and misuse of handguns ― have become sources of national concern.4

Gardaí on the ground are becoming increasingly concerned about the growth of violent gun crime in the Republic.

While there are major problems with the recording of our crime statistics, it is evident that we have a gun-murder rate six times worse than Britain.

An island with some of the most restrictive gun laws? Rising gun crime?

And please….don’t forget….at the time of the most evil and oppressive British policies in Ireland, the Northern militia groups had plenty of fully automatic military weapons and explosives

Ireland has different firearm laws than the rest of the UK, they're very relaxed over there.

Apparently they have strict gun control laws...please read the first post again...

Firearms in the Republic of Ireland are strictly controlled, both with strict legislation governing licensing, and fastidious application of that legislation by the Gardaí. The legislation has multiple overlapping Firearms Acts that define it, but the core principles include: all firearms must be licensed individually, each applicant must have a good reason for having the firearm, must have a safe place in which to use it, must have a secure place in which to store it, and to be of sound mind and temperate habits.

And yet......

Ireland has a high number of shootings and firearm seizures compared to other European countries.

A new study analysed 28 EU countries based on population and found Ireland to have a "high" rate of non-fatal shootings and a "medium-high" rate of both fatal shootings and firearm seizures in comparison.

Ireland...is an island...with strict gun control laws.....and something tells me the majority of their gun crime is isolated in the Northern part of the Island...

Yep......

Most of Ireland's shootings over the two-year period took place in Dublin.

Figures obtained by the Irish Examiner reveal that 134 out of 194 shootings happened in the capital.

Limerick follows behind with six shootings, Louth had six and Cork recorded five.

So...how is it possible that only a certain area of the island has so much gun crime...while the rest doesn't?

The gun laws apply to the entire island...right?

You're intrigued by Ireland, here's a background on their gun policy.

I imagine America's gun stats per capita dwarf Ireland's.

There should be a law requiring that the government not have guns. Historically, governments have proven they can't be trusted with gun ownership.
