Actually, there are a couple of reasons why Iran would claim to have a nuclear weapons and not, in fact, have one.

1. They have been trying to build one for decades and they look kind of foolish for not being able to do what North Korea, Pakistan, and India have already done.

2. One of the reasons they haven't been able to do so is a combination of US sanctions and Israel sabotage (covert and not so covert). So, claiming to have a completed bomb is calculated to prevent the next US administration from re-imposing sanctions (what would be the point?) and to dissuade Israel from direct attacks on their nuclear facilities.

After all, when it comes to nuclear weapons... they are just as effective if your enemies believe you have them as they are if you actually do have them ... and a heck of a lot cheaper.

What it has really claimed is that they can enrich uranium to weapons grade. No more, no less.

Well, first of all they have not claimed they have a nuclear bomb....they just said they are now capable of producing one.

To that they added they have not decided whether or not they will make one.

Now we really have no idea if they are capable of making a nuclear weapon but I am sure Israel has more information on that than anyone since they have a very capable intelligence service that has thoroughly penetrated Iran.

It has been Israeli policy to never allow Iran to get a nuclear weapon.....since from the time Iran began its nuclear program....not only has Israel publicly stated they will not allow it they have taken many actions to sabotage Irans nuclear program already.
