"A new human rights curriculum that was recently introduced to middle schools and high schools all across New York is a disservice to students because it wastes precious instruction time which would be more wisely spent on academic fundamentals.

The web event originated from a classroom at Chestnut Ridge Middle School, a school with a student population that recently scored below-average on statewide tests, according to the New York Times. It is extremely difficult to see how lessons focusing on corporate “greed,” landmine awareness, Chinese labor camps and abolishing the death penalty will do anything to raise student test scores in math, reading and science.

This is another case of public schools using class time to indoctrinate students with a radical, leftist political agenda. No curriculum that promotes the views of Van Jones should be allowed to pollute the minds of school kids."
Breitbart: NY Schools Teaching Speak Truth to Power Curriculum Featuring Van Jones | The Party Of Know

"The general agenda of this program is typical teacher-mumbo jumbo speak that seeks to hide a real leftist agenda of dumbing down students while they learn to submit to learned authority.

Browsing through the so-called ‘Human Rights Education’ curriculum, I get the sense that students who follow it and learn from it are not going to respect my human rights because they, in all their great wisdom, will feel that other people’s human rights are not being protected or supported or fully embraced until I lose all my rights and am reduced to the state of an animal, hunted because of my conservative beliefs. The HRE education is hostile to the US Constitution, hostile to the Bill of Rights, and hostile to natural rights philosophy, instead embracing the Universal Declaration of Rights, embracing a strong government that will redistribute wealth, and embracing communist philosophy."

As long as this is not a required course, or tought as part of another, like English, I don't have a real problem with this.

B/c the parents of the kids that sign them up for this already teach that at home.

If this is required, I'd like to know where the mandatory teaching of the Constitution is.

Why the heck would we want the government school system in a free market republic turning out radical totalitarian global viewpoint that promotes the work and teaching of Van Jones, ...

"Jones resigned in September, 2009 after it was exposed he founded a communist revolutionary organization and signed a statement that accused the Bush administration of possible involvement in the 9/11 attacks.

Jones also called for “resistance” against the U.S., among multiple other revelations of his extremist rhetoric and ideology."Jones was a founder and leader of the communist revolutionary organization Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement, or STORM.

Other so-called defenders include Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus, who was recently accused of misusing humanitarian aid, the Daliai Lama, and South African activist, Desmond Tutu.

Both Yunus and Tutu are founders of The Global Elders, which has gone on solidarity visits to leaders of the Hamas and Hezbollah terrorist organizations

... Jones founded the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, describing that organization as “a strategy center for documenting and exposing human rights violations in the United States-particularly those perpetuated by law enforcement.”

...Baker was an avowed socialist who worked closely with communist activists. She also participated in events that were close to the radical Weathermen domestic terrorist group founded by Bill Ayers, President Obama’s associate for many years.

Whether it is required or not, where is the alternative side of these perspecives in government schools?

Makes ya wonder really why these teachers want to teach, knowing it doesn't pay worth squat. To promote an agenda to the young?

Armed after college with my degree in Journalism, I never worked a day in that field. Because I wanted to MAKE MONEY not "change the world." There was no real money to be made in my chosen field, so I adapted and went into another. And did very well compared to my classmates who fell on their financial future swords, for some odd reason.

One of them has been working at the local paper for nearly 30 years, and just made regional editor! Woo-Hoo! He finally broke 40K and hasn't changed the world yet!

Might want to re-read my post.

The kids that will go see this tripe have parents the believe this tripe.

If it's mandatory, I will expect the Constitution to also be mandatory. Since I know no school (I ever heard of) teaches it, I will make a complete ass out of myself to keep my kids from being taught communism.

Off the top of my head, as I know of no stats on the subject, I wonder how many HS students' parents have any input or interest in what the kids choose, if they have that option.

As for communism, my children aren't middle school age yet, but we regularly discuss communism and other political philosophies. I hope many folks do. We read the Constitution, as well.

Kids of parents that don't care, don't pay attention in class, or go for the easy "A".

My kids will never get a class that has not met my approval.

My eldest takes some real junk electives. Pop culture, mysticism (about monsters and myth) And I check them all before I let her take them. Why do I allow such tripe? The most important classes she takes are honor classes and she has a 4.1-2 gpa

PC, When reading our Constitution to your not yet middle school kids do you explain and put in context the principle of Judicial Review (Marbury v. Madison), explain many USSC rulings have not been unanimous and have at times ignored the ethos*** in one of our most endearing documents (see the Declaration of Independence v. Dred Scott, for example). Do you indoctrinate or educate? Fair question given your highly partisan posts.

Can you point to the 'right wing christians' indocrination in the government schools?

You misunderstand the nature of morality in the incorporation of and use of what we learn.

The Enlightenment attempted to replace religion with 'reason,' and rapidly gave us the totalist political philosophies.

From Berman's "Terror and Liberalism," chapter two:

1. The Western urge to rebel, coming out of the French Revolution, mutated quickly into several cults of death and mayhem. No matter the particular movement, there were two key conditions in all: 1. it was based on a submission to a central authority, the total state, and 2. it was based on the idea of one, instead of many.

2. Each of the movements adopted the same set of rites and symbols to express that ideal: crowds chanting en masse, the monumental architecture, the insistence on unquestioning belief in preposterous doctrines.

a. Each of the movements chose its own monochrome symbol, representing the oneness of authority, in red, brown or black.

b. Each donned the identical uniform, - a shirt of red, brown or black.

c. Each recounted a theory about history and mankind, explaining the movement’s goals and actions.

Since Judicial Review is not in the Constitution am I correct in assuming you limit your 'educating' to the text in Article III?

Really? With children not yet of middle school age?

It would be presumptuous of me to offer another opinon to the Chief Justice's argument, though in the proper forum it might be fun, for I suspect other opinions - for that is in fact what Chief Rehnquist offers, a legal opinion, might easily be found to offer a different perspective.
Of the top isn't our Constitution founded on principles of social justice? Wasn't the Magna Carta - one document which greatly influenced our Constitution - a product produced to fix social inequity?
If you agree isn't it the job of the Court to interpret the principles within the confines of contemporary society? The Court did so after the Civil War, as the Chief notes; and did so in the years before the CW; in fact if I undestand the issue, created the climate which lead to war along with a deeply divided Congress. A Congress divided on partisan issues, not general principles, as some would have us believe.
One might look to Citizens United v. FEC as a general principle which may have fit into the legal opinon expressed and supported by the Chief Justice; yet, the consequences in terms of our Constitution and democratic principles seems at best incongruent.

The Left/Democrats have been indoctrinating kids for many many years. Stories like this never surprise me. The kids can't read or write but they sure can recite that Leftist "Human Rights" propaganda. That pretty much sums up our Public Schools at this point. The Left by way of Teacher Unions have brought their greed & politics into the Classroom. And that's why our Public Schools are producing more & more dummies.

They just don't want to teach the kids the basics anymore. It's all about political indoctrination now. It's certainly no coincidence that nations with far less money & resources are passing us up in education. They're just training the kids to be good little future Leftist/Democrats. It's even worse in our University System. The Lefty loons have thoroughly hijacked higher education in America. It really is sad & disturbing. More dumb Leftists in America? Yea that's just what we need. Yikes!

Why would you suppose that children could not understand that there are judges who self-aggrandize in terms of the powers they assume?

Since Progressives such as Roscoe Pound altered the way lawyers are instructed, the Constitution itself has receded in importance.

Rehnquist hits the nail on he head as follows:

1. The brief writer’s version
seems instead to be based upon the proposition that federal
judges, perhaps judges as a whole, have a role of their own,
quite independent of popular will, to play in solving society’s
problems.
Once we have abandoned the idea that the authority
of the courts to declare laws unconstitutional is somehow tied
to the language of the Constitution that the people adopted, a
judiciary exercising the power of judicial review appears in a
quite different light.

a. Judges then are no longer the keepers of
the covenant; instead they are a small group of fortunately
situated people with a roving commission to second-guess
Congress, state legislatures, and state and federal administrative
officers concerning what is best for the country.
Surely
there is no justification for a third legislative branch in the federal
government, and there is even less justification for a federal
legislative branch’s reviewing on a policy basis the laws
enacted by the legislatures of the fifty states.

Outside of reading laws in the light of the Constitution, we have nothing but
Lochnerization disguised as judicial review.
