The first eleven chapters of the Torah are allegorical accounts of the history that everyone shares. They were passed down orally for thousands of years from generation to generation before being recorded in writing.

The account of creation is in stark contrast to the prevalent polytheistic origin narratives. God created existence and everything arose over time in a logical sequential fashion. It's actually quite remarkable. They believed 6,000 years before science that the universe was created.
