In just three months, data center backlash stalls $130 billion in projects across 49 states

Seems low to me but I tried dumbing it down the best I could for ya.
I have to admit. That is pretty dumb.

If you believe the Chinese figures, then I have a wall in China I'd like to sell to you.

Also, it's not the number of data centers, it's the capacity of them. A single mega data center in China could use more water/electricity/unicorn farts/whatever than 100 regular sized ones in the USA.

Why is stopping economic growth, and keeping people poor who need jobs, good?

I mean.... you do realize that the very fact you are here right now, means you want Data Centers?
Where do you think this web site, and the messages, and videos, and pictures... where do you think everything you are looking at on this web page is stored?

At a data center. You being here means we need Data Centers. Every single thing you do online happens at a data center.

So what do you want? I worked at a CitiGroup at one of their.... Data Centers. And Data Centers account for 3/4 a million jobs. And these are not McJobs, low pay jobs. These are good well paying jobs, that people need.

But you are against that? Why? And when your online banking fails.... because you shut down the data center that runs it, are you telling me you'll be cool with that?

That's not what's happening.

This has been going on around here for a long time. Cheap power, lots of water. Apple was first, secretly trying to buy up land but it didn't take long, those in the end made millions selling what was previously pasture. Huge complex, at one time, handled all the apple downloads for the entire northern hemisphere went through there. But give it to them, they provide their own power, solar, largest private self-generating facility in the country. Then came Google, and before long, they were popping up everywhere.

The thing is, it really was solar that was behind all that. They really did front install their energy demands. Solar farms popped up everywhere, and I saw some long-term leases, pretty sweet deal in many cases. There was some local kickback, to be honest, many of the sellers just up and split. It sometimes got ugly. But the real problem came with the competition for that real estate. Distribution hubs, truck stops, place went whack-a-doodle. At this point, the land battle is pretty much over. They moved on, check out race country, Mooresville, NC, rural Iredell county. Them NASCAR drivers are jumping ship like rats off a sinking ship. And not just drivers selling their mansions on Lake Norman, but teams moving, or dissolving, their organization.

It is past time for the backlash. I really don't see the cost/benefit return. Data centers merely carve us up, chew US up, and spit US out, categorized, targeted, segmented. I mean is no one starting to get it. Bitcoin, uh, we need power. Data centers, uh, we need power. AI, uh, we need power. I mean I am here to tell you something, if the cure for cancer required massive amounts of power, we would have cured cancer.

Data centers probably won't use all that water and electricity. They can be just structures with names on the doors to provide AI cover for corporations planning to fire unproductive staff.

If the actual computing is just some guys in India, Actual Indians, then the electricity and water use of existing "data centers" here might be something else that the corporations don't want to mention yet.

They are making everything more expensive for regular people for no visible gain.
The visible gain..... you are looking at it right now.
This website, as are all others, run on computers at a data center. The investment in data centers in the past, is what has brought you the visible gain you are enjoying this very second. This is happening at a data center.
And without data centers, EVERYTHING that is on the internet would not exist.

Have you used a bank app? Data center. Have you logged into to pay a bill on your computer? Data center. Have you uploaded, downloaded, or watched any visual media at all? Data center.

Everything that runs, runs through a data center.

And you may think that well everything is working right now, so we don't need anymore data centers. The problem is, the population of the planet is growing. As more people go online, the things that work today will become overwhelmed and crash.
In order to increase the bandwidth required to sustain just the existing infrastructure we have, we will in fact need more data centers.

Nope. This forum is not run on the AI data centers and predates them by years.

There is not visible gain from AI at this time.

So what?
It's still run at a Data Center.

You can now clarify that you only have a problem with "AI data centers", but they are still data centers.
And I don't know what you think "predates them", means because websites change who hosts them all the time.

In fact I was told decades ago, when I had my own website, that if I started generating traffic to my site over a certain amount, that I would need to move my site to a new platform.

So that's not a new thing. Sites move around from server to server all the time.

Now let's go back to specifically AI Data Centers. You can say that you don't want to use it, and fair enough. But the fact is.... and it's just a fact... a lot of people are using AI services. And they want their services just like you do.

Who are you to tell the other 100 million people in this country, and possibly billions in the world, that they can't have the services they desire?
