The Hindus have pantheon of "gawwds" who they claimed to fly about in large machines.
Greeks and Romans inherited the same pantheon as the Sumerians had. Just changed the names and places a bit.

Inanna is Isis is Ishtar is Aphrodite is Venus for example. (A few other names I don't recall at the moment.)
