If we nationalized the oil industry we wouldn't need to raise taxes

The government would take over the industry that siphons a natural resource (that is arguably owned by nobody and everybody at once), and use the hundreds of billions in profit to fund things like universal health care, pay down the debt, etc.
so, they would open a new department and hire a bunch of people? like the workers being let go from the private sector, when this happens? gvt pensions for all the workers would have to be deducted calculations from the profit? never knew gvt agencies planned to make a profit, they usually try to break even and pass the savings on to us?

the idea of the gvt making billions sounds great...not certain about the logistics though....

I suppose they could simply break even and then we could go back to paying $0.59/gal for gasoline. And that way we could afford to pay higher taxes elsewhere.
yeah, that could work! ;)

it's not unconstitutional to own our oil imo....it would be like gvt owning the highways or national parks or electric companies and water companies and sewer Is what I think.... gvt owns a good deal of the electric companies etc already.....of course it is local gvt vs federal, but what the hey?

If the government owned the Sahara within 5 years there would be a shortage of sand.

If they nationalized the oil industry in 5 years there would be no oil.

Oh snap, nobody told you?

That $0.59 a gallon stuff was the stuff seeping out of the ground in Pennsylvania. The 'Low-hanging fruit' if you will.

We ain't got no mo' of that left. Everything from here on out is farther, deeper, less convenient, more expensive to produce.

how would that work?

our gvt would pay the exxon's of the world on a contract to drill and/or purchase our oil?

or the gvt would hire all their employees and geologists etc?

?????

That's right. Because the economy would collapse back to the stone age so there'd be no need for taxes, because we would either collapse the dollar to zero with all the borrowing we'd need to buy the assets, or we would see a massive capital flight as the government took over the oil fields by force.

Prolly not a good idea...

Thomas Paine proposed that all natural resources were equally owned by all people. He believed that those who used those resources for profit should be taxed and that the tax money should be distributed to the poor to provide a "minimum guaranteed income".

Not surprising that Thomas Paine's idea have been supressed. He's barely remembered as a founding father, but yet he was probably the key architect of American political philosohy.

Yeah, it'd be broke in two years.

You think it would take that long?

You have it wrong, no one said anything about paying for the assets. The idea here would be that "for the good of the people", the government would simply confiscate the assets of the oil companies.

You realize that is the liberal/socialist way, don't you?

We could always deal with the massive capital flight the same way Robespierre did!

If that's your goal, raise royalty taxes. But you'd get lower production and lower economic growth if you did.

I come from a place where socialists - real socialists, not pretend "socialists" Republicans search for under their beds every night - did nationalize the natural resources. And they paid for them.

Yeah, but those were honest socialists, not United States politicians.
