If food shortages threaten, what would you stock up on?

Without becoming a 'prepper', what foods would you squirrel away against possible shortages due to the ominous forecasts concerning the weather, shortages of fertilizer, possible price hikes?

My choice would be peanut butter and whole wheat products.

I figure that once the Zombie Apocalypse hits our currency will be worthless.

The currency of choice will become canned beer. You will be able to buy and sell anything as the desire for beer skyrockets

Personally, I have been stocking up for decades. My wife thinks I am crazy but what does she know!

.

Already have. Freeze dried meat, poultry, vegetables and fruit, packaged to last for 25 years.

Canned goods. I do not like eating such stuff, but you can keep canned goods stored for many years. Pragmatism will keep one alive when all else fails.

I realized recently that I would be joining the winning team pretty quickly. Team Zombie!

High-salt hot sauces, BBQ sauces, and other condiments.

Oh wait, I already have. There's an Amish dent-n-bent store up the road from me and I've been stocking up on every imaginable brand they have for several years now.

Anything is edible if you put enough flavor on it. :laughing0301:

Calorie dense foods have ALWAYS been prized....especially ones that travel well.

Including dried fruits and nuts....even dried olives (for the oil and fruit)
Dried and cured meats.

Anything that can be preserved, stored, and travel with that is calorie dense.....including chocolate.

Running from zombies with a backpack is one thing....running with a shopping cart or wheelbarrow is another.

Choose wisely.

Seeds and grains and beans, salt and matches......I assume someone still makes matches.

You took my words. I still have some dehydrated foodstuffs pushing 30 years old that is still going strong. I keep it stored in my fruit cellar.

Boil a little water, add package, Voila! instant meal for four.

Bourbon. Barrels of bourbon. I ain't going down sober to the Apocalypse.
That is not a bad play, it will become hard currency. Should be able to hunt, trap, or fish for protein. Have some home canned meat, dried beef, and saltmeat for back up. Beans, lots of beans. Flour, cornmeal, sugar, and lard. And Heirloom seeds, hybrids are not going to cut it.

If it goes on for a long time what is the point? Population reduction is a guarantee. In the beginning paper money will go the way to clad coins then finally junk silver may be used as a currency to purchase fruits and vegetables and any packaged/canned products that still is produced.

HOT Sauce will become irreplaceable

I figure I could eat anything if I slop enough hot sauce on it.
Bugs, worms, snails and hot sauce will make them edible

Too late.

My wife is into canning and we've got about 5 years worth of food that has been canned and another 2 or 3 years of assorted canned and dry goods.

I am currently the proud owner of a genuine 1964 Cold War-era Civil Defense shelter survival crackers, sealed in the original 5-gallon tin.

Not that I'd actually eat them. They're probably pretty nasty by now.
