If food shortages threaten, what would you stock up on?

I'm sure that you've seen 'swollen' cans over you lifetime. That is a sure sign that the contents have turned. My experience has been that as long as there is no swelling or dents in the can that would compromise the seal--the contents will be safe. LOL, I've eaten canned goods that were in excess of ten years past the printed exp. date.
.

I'm weird. I won't eat anybody else's home-canned goods. I don't trust people enough.

Yeah, I've known about swollen and dented cans, and I too am willing to eat those cans after exp. date.

We don't can, but my sister and daughter do. I've eaten my sisters canning for years and she taught my daughter.

Canned goods have been known to go bad over time--I would lean toward dehydrated food myself. Very shelf stable, light to carry and small to store. They have served us well in combat situations over the past 50+ years.

Go bad over time? like 10 or 20 years?

That's ok by me.;)

Sometimes, but canned goods are notorious for going bad -- sometimes while sitting on the store shelf. Dehydrated meals--while not as appetizing as canned, don't go bad and they are a dependable source. I have a mixture of both.

Yes, keep a mix of everything that doesn't perish too soon.

I've got four years old canned veggies that are starting to be questionable. Some old boys say the contents are fine as long as the seals are intact.

I’ve eaten canned goods that were 10 years old. As long as I don’t see substantial rust on the outside or puffy can, it’s good to me. Botulism frightens me.

Jerky, eggs, apples, and maybe some other fruits and fish. Youtube has vids of how to preserve eggs in ashes and other DIY stuff. I would dehydrate the apples.

I have seen prepper food loaded with preservatives described as sitting in the guts like brick mortar.

This is what you need to stack deep preps. Unless you got a warehouse. For the poor with no room, they roll easily on casters to nest your preps.
