I suspect the real rub here is the disparity in ages. I'm not uncomfortable with arranged marriages but the age difference is just to great to overcome.

I'm not entirely opposed to the idea of arranged marriages. In fact, in most cases I think parents could do a much better job of picking a mate than a typical young man or woman. If you are raised in that culture, it would be fine.

What American parent would 'arrange' a marriage of their 9 year old girl? On the other hand, I knew an engineer from India that was here on one of those H-1B visas.. His marriage was arranged. I asked him why and he said 'that's just the way it is.' Mostly because of their strict caste system.

I also worked with an Indian gentleman who announced his engagement - out of the blue - one day, explaining that his parents had arranged it with the daughter of a family friend. He was fine with it, got married in due course, and was happy in his marriage. Lakshmi Mittal (you could look him up) enjoyed an arranged marriage. One of the wealthiest, most successful men in the world, at least for a time.
