I was wandering around Lowe's the other day, looking for those little devices that are used to hang pictures on drywall. I encountered a guy wearing a work uniform and a name tag, and asked him for the information. He laughed and said, "Everybody assumes I work here, but I'm a customer."

The "white guys" in question saw the OP, looked at how he was dressed, groomed, walking, and what he was doing, and presumed that he was on the maintenance staff at the apartment building.
