My brother (a democrat) gave my dad a Ring doorbell for Christmas. I’m now tasked with installing it and making it work.

He has a large home with thick outer walls. I’m talking walls like Fort Knox. They aren’t your typical wood and sheet rock walls.

He has an old router on the second floor with spotty reception on the first. I replaced it with a new one that I thought would help.

I first first bought this thinking it would solve the problem......

While it did help, it didn’t help enough to get this thing working the way it should.

I then ordered this.....

I’m hoping this thing will work. I also hope my brother starts thinking like a republican. Someone who considers all facts before making a decision.

If it has video capabilities is it possible that the internet connection doesn't have enough bandwidth? Or are you certain it's simply a WiFi signal strength problem?

Maybe you need a couple extenders instead of just one. This stuff is kind of hard to troubleshoot on forums.

The first extender I installed helped. After looking closer at the Mbps, I ordered a new one.

After talking with my dad, I’m now looking at installing an outlet on the porch for this thing to work.

No offense to your brother, but what a shitty Christmas gift.

"Here, Dad. Now try pretending you don't hear the door."

I'm at a point where I wanna ask my brother wtf he was thinking. He should know about the hundreds I've spent to make his gift usable.

There's a reason why I despise democrats.

Range extender. Small unit plugs into the wall and is basically a relay of the WiFi signal.

I tried one that didn't work. I since ordered another type and will be my keeping my fingers crossed.

I’m finally making some progress.

Here’s what I’ve done....
Replaced the old router he had upstairs.
Purchased another router for downstairs.
Purchased a Netgear Powerline....

The signal I’m seeing at the doorbell is now acceptable, but the speed is questionable. I’m thinking the two outlets might be on a different phase/feed.
My next task is to confirm my suspicions. I’ll have to make some changes in the panel if I’m correct.

I’m still on the fence about telling my brother what it took to make his gift work. Part of me wants him to start thinking things through ... another part knows he’ll always be a democrat.
