How will the Trump tariffs actually work ?

He is proposing 60% on chinese goods. I can see the attraction but this would lead to huge shortages and much higher prices for consumers who are forced to buy expensive american goods
Higher priced American products because wages go to American workers instead of chinese workers

Surely even a Brit voyeur can see the benefit of that

Americans will not pay the premium.

What was the inflation rate under Trump when he put tariffs on China his last term, what shortages did we have when Trump put tariffs his last term?

If American products were cheaper it would benefit Americans to by American and limit China’s influence on our markets and less reliance from a nation with poor environmental, labor and business practices.
What jobs were brought back last time.?
I agree we should use economic power to encourage bettter practices in the world but I think that ship has sailed long ago.

Americans will not pay the premium.
The tariff will raise the cost of imported products to the level of domestically produced products, so consumers will pay about the same price whether they buy imports or domestically produced products. The purpose is to prevent America jobs from moving to China or other places that have lower labor costs.

Americans will refuse to pay it. They will buy cheaper versions on the black market.

Tariffs are a blunt tool. How will they actually work ? I can only see prices rising and shortages on US shelves.

The targets he names are easily surmountable. Food and Cars. Well I see many cars from US companies. Ford,Cheverolet, General Motors and even Tesla.

Food is easily rectified by producing food prepared to European standards Not using Frankenstein technology. You have to adapt to the market you are selling to.

So what is likely to happen in the US and to its trade ?
History tends to repeat itself, Tommy. What is likely to happen is Trump will threaten tariffs and use them sparingly just like he did in his first term.

This is a problem, he is asking to understand a issue and you dump on him, he is asking for information, you may not agree with him, I rarely do but dialogue is needed to understand his perspective as well as he can understand yours. We all have differing opinions, we need to find common ground by open dialogue.

People like Tithead should not be given info .
He will never understand what is told to him but then will still regurgitate some half baked nonsense .
See his total reliance on porn rag The Guardian with barely 100k distribution .
It is individuals like him who blow holes in the idea that old fashioned democracy is a sensible and good idea .

How will Trump's tariffs work? In the same way as Bidens.
Speaking of Biden tariffs...

WashingtonCNN —
The Biden administration said Friday that it has finalized tariff hikes on certain Chinese-made products that the president first announced in May.

The tariff rate will go up to 100% on electric vehicles, to 50% on solar cells and to 25% on electrical vehicle batteries, critical minerals, steel, aluminum, face masks and ship-to-shore cranes beginning September 27, according to the US Trade Representative’s Office

Funny how this slipped under the radar of those screaming about tariffs.

like most things, you have no idea how tariffs actually work. A tariff is applied to a foreign product that is imported into the USA for sale, the importer has to pay the tariff, He then adds the tariff to the price of his product for sale in the USA. This makes foreign products more expensive than the same domestic products and thereby helps US companies by making their products more price competitive. This helps US companies and US workers. and is a good thing for America. Other countries do the same thing to protect their domestic producers. Why do you think that no Harley Davidsons are sold in Italy? Because Italy puts a high tariff on them to protect Italian motorcycle companies. It's really not complicated if you have a working brain.

Thanks but im not going to dig up your old posts.
To help you I will give an example.
10% on a bottle of single malt will add up to 10 dollars to the price. People will trade down and or the distillers will stop shipping.
So you’re saying that people will spend $90 on a bottle of good scotch but not $100?

I doubt that.
