How to save inner city schools.

School choice and vouchers can be part of the solution, but not the entire solution.

Even with vouchers many inner city people don’t have the ability to provide transportation to a school several miles away from their home. A solution for that would need to be developed. We could go back to the era of bussing I suppose.

A lot of inner city schools are dangerous outside and inside a classroom. They are allowed to be riddled with graffiti and allowed to be in disrepair.

First, security needs to be upgraded then they need to be cleaned up to look like a place for learning. This would help foster discipline with students.

After that we need to purge the substandard teachers. Institute merit pay for teachers based on academic test results. If a teacher can not produce a satisfactory level of student achievement they need to find another career.

The major obstacle to that are the--you guessed it! The teacher's unions. They value tenure over merit.

Again, my assertion is that white families had the right idea back in the mid-20th century. Cities became overcrowded, festering cesspools of crime, decay, and blight. When the suburbs appeared, these families got out of Dodge faster than you can pack a house to move away. Having said that, what "solution" outside of the sprawling 'burbs would these neo-urbanists propose for returning WWII veterans who had the GI Bill and were marrying and starting families? Do we stuff them into already overcrowded urban cores?

Tenure? What is that? Never received tenure in my entire career because administrators use it to save money. They just fail to renew your contract at tenure time, and you are unemployed. Happened to me twice at the three-year point. They can hire two new teachers for what an experienced teacher costs them.

Administrators are hampered by school board policies and in most cases those people are elected.
