How to cut school costs and improve student health.

That's an aside. Answer mine first. WHY do you get to decide how much exercise other people's kids get?

Oh right. Because YOU think it's a great idea. Got it.
Actually, the school board would have to make that decision, and based on what I know about liberal school boards it would be turned down.

What are the wishes of the parents?

Who knows? You and Mac decided the kids are too fat and out of shape, so the bus can drop them off and they can walk. Mac said the public schools have control over the kids for the entire day, so...

I like the concept, but this country isn't safe enough to let a child out in their own backyard anymore.
My district already refuses bus service to people who live within a certain distance. Not sure what the distance is, exactly, I should look that up.

We also have kids that prefer to bike home rather than walk. One girl on the AU spectrum used to worry me about that, because stepmom dressed her in dresses and she would have been a prime target for a perv.

Park the school bus at least 3/4 mile from school. Kids can walk to school and back from there. Kids living within 3/4 mile can walk to and from home. This will give kids needed exercise and save busing costs as well.
The idea is great. The Irish Ram has a point. The solution is guards along the way, similar to crossing guards, or better yet, involved parents who keep their kids safe.

That idea would be a non-starter here in New England these days. I’ve seen quite a few school systems now where any child who would have to cross a street has to be bussed to school, average bus stops at literally every child’s driveway. Additionally there must be an adult waiting there to accompany them once they exit the bus.

Total lunacy so far as I’m concerned, but it’s what they do.

In my day even kindergartners walked both ways. I never saw a parent pick up a child in all my seven years of elementary school, although in high school many took the city buses to and from their neighborhoods, but they lived a long way from school. We elementary kids had more schools within walking distance.

I just googled the driving/walking distance to my old elementary school; 0.8 miles. My old high school was closer: 0.6 miles.
With good reason. With all the Homos and sick freaks around ,nothing is safe for a child.

Not a problem as the kids would walk to and from school as a group.

Pedophiles aren't dumb. Hang a few of them and the rest will get the message.

Madison, Wisconsin, January 30, 1951. Temperature -37. No school closures, no bussing of students. Only a few of us showed up however. I was in 5th grade. Everything was still and crackling it was so cold. It was so fascinating that I hardly noticed the extreme cold on my 8/10 mile walk to school and 8/10 mile back home. I still remember it.

Did I mention that I got recognition for my near perfect attendance record K through 6th grade?

The Best fate for a Pedo? Send them to Prison. General Population. No protective custody. And greenlight them.

No, you do your politics like you do your religion: whatever you think is, of course, correct. Even if it's inconsistent and contradictory.
Speculative and controversial yes, inconsistent and contradictory, no.

I felt like you do once. In a bible study a lady brought up a study she had done that turned a certain subject on its head. I was disturbed and a bit angry until I studied it myself and found that she was correct. From that day I have been doing deeper studies and have discovered some pretty eye-opening things. So I see where you are coming from.

Good idea except that the next Democrat president would likely pardon them.

Compared to when? I’m willing to bet that your perception that it was safer at whatever time you are thinking is nothing but your perception

It's interesting to me how when "conservatives" think it's a great idea, it's okay to usurp the wishes of the parents.

So you're comfortable with the govt deciding the children need to walk?

Huh.
You got it backwards. It's the government that decided that kids should ride, by consolidating neighborhood schools into large, distant, regional schools that required busing.

I'll say mostly - that elementary schools are still fairly small and in neighorhoods. Not all, but mostly.

It consolidation of schools into larger campus is mostly something in the Middle and High School levels as it becomes much more efficient for the consolidation of resources for use by larger populations.

We can go to distributed Middle and High Schools, but then you have to go to taxpayers for the additional resources to build duplicate resources at lots of different campuses.
