Park the school bus at least 3/4 mile from school. Kids can walk to school and back from there. Kids living within 3/4 mile can walk to and from home. This will give kids needed exercise and save busing costs as well.
In my day even kindergartners walked both ways. I never saw a parent pick up a child in all my seven years of elementary school, although in high school many took the city buses to and from their neighborhoods, but they lived a long way from school. We elementary kids had more schools within walking distance. When I was a kiddie we had to walk to the bus stop to catch the bus and walk home from it. Now they practically have curbside service.

My mom took us when we were in elementary but then we rode the bus until we got our license and could drive ourselves. Now they pick elementary schools school kids up in front of their house and the older kids only have to walk to their street corner to be picked up there. Our spoilt kids always have been driven but that is because they have always been in private schools except when #1 went to a public high school out of district (in college now). Our local public school system has really gone downhill because the city has had a huge white flight problem which combined with school consolidation efforts resulting in every public school becoming epitomes of inner city schools which has driven more white flight, rinse and repeatIn my day even kindergartners walked both ways. I just googled the driving/walking distance to my old elementary school; 0.8 miles. My old high school was closer: 0.6 miles.

I like the idea
3/4 mile for the little kids, and 1 mile for grades 7-12
Someone in government decided that the kids need to rideIt's interesting to me how when "conservatives" think it's a great idea, it's okay to usurp the wishes of the parents.
So you're comfortable with the govt deciding the children need to walk?
Huh.
Someone in government decided that the kids need to ride
there is no difference
Isnt exercise and physical fitness taught in public schools anymore?Kids don't NEED to ride. Parents are capable of dropping off or letting their children walk.
But in your plan, the kids would be REQUIRED to walk. Right? You have made this decision for the parents--as a "conservative"--because you think it's good for the kids.
No different from the Left preaching on gender, etc. It's just that you like this idea
Isnt exercise and physical fitness taught in public schools anymore?
I guess if they grow up to be fat blobs riding the electric cart at walmart its no skin off your nose
So in your public school monopoly parents can demand that students do nothing related to physical fitness?Whether or not YOU think the idea is great for kids is not the issue. It's how quickly you abandon your "parents first" philosophy as soon as YOU think it's something good for the kids.
Why shouldn't the parents make this determination?
So in your public school monopoly parents can demand that students do nothing related to physical fitness?
I hope all public teachers are not as irrational as youDude what are you talking about? You love the monopoly a lot more than me. You have decided kids are fat and out of shape so, by governmental fiat, stop the bus one mile from school and make those kiddies walk.
You love the Big Govco as long as it agrees with you. Too many "conservatives" are like this
TBH, a lot of parents are more worried about the other kids than a guy in a van with free candy.I used to say this was parents spoiling their kids, but to be honest in this day and age I don't blame parents. Too much child trafficking out there
I hope all public teachers are not as irrational as you
But I fear that most of them are
