New Army Training and Readiness Initiatives
The U.S. Army is rolling out
new training and readiness programs that will shape how soldiers are prepared for modern combat.
1. New Combat Field Test (CFT)
Starting in
April 2026, the Army will implement the
Combat Field Test (CFT) as an annual requirement for active-duty Soldiers in
24 designated combat military occupational specialties The Official Home Page of the United States Army.
- The CFT is not replacing the Army Fitness Test (AFT) — instead, combat specialty Soldiers on active duty for 365+ days will take both annually; others in combat specialties will alternate between AFT and CFT each year.
- The CFT is a seven-event sequence scored on total time, including:
- Purpose: To reinforce combat standards, lethality, and physical readiness in the most demanding specialties.
2. Recruiting Command’s Role in Initial Training
Following a 2025 reorganization,
Recruiting Command now oversees
initial training for both Soldiers and officers
Stars and Stripes. This includes:
- The Center for Initial Military Training
- Army Recruiting Division, Cadet Command, and Enterprise & Marketing Office
- Closer integration between recruiters and training bases to improve precision enlistment and reduce attrition
- Oversight of the Future Soldier Preparatory Course, a 90-day program for recruits needing to meet physical or academic standards before Basic Training Task & Purpose
3. Basic Training Structure (2026)
Army Basic Combat Training (BCT) remains in three phases
Operation Military Kids:
- Red Phase (Weeks 1–3): Core values, rifle handling, drills, marching, and early PT evaluations.
- White Phase (Weeks 4–5): Advanced drills, weapons training, and continued PT.
- Blue Phase (Weeks 6–9): Advanced combat skills, leadership, and final PT evaluation.
4. Broader Training Command Changes
The Army’s
Transformation and Training Command (T2COM), formed in October 2025 by merging Training and Doctrine Command and Futures Command, now unifies force design, development, and generation
Wikipedia. This includes:
- Basic Training and Holistic Health and Fitness programs
- Recruiting Command and Cadet Command
- Major training centers like Fort Irwin NTC and Fort Polk JRTC
Bottom line: From April 2026, combat specialty Soldiers will face a tougher, more realistic fitness test, while Recruiting Command’s expanded role and the Future Soldier Preparatory Course aim to ensure only the most prepared candidates enter Basic Training. These changes reflect the Army’s push for
precision enlistment, lethality, and readiness in a smaller, more focused force.
