House Bill Would Cut Funding to Backers of Israeli Boycotts

If boycotting Cuba, Iran, and North Korea is ok than so should boycotting Israeli settlements.

Otherwise we are a nation of hypocrites.

Ummm...Arabs want into Israel. Israeli Arabs have a better life there. Even in the so-called "westbank" How many people are knocking down the doors to get into those countries? :cuckoo:

The West Bank has a much higher unemployment rate than all its Arab neighbors.

Really? Syria where they are killing Arabs by the 10s of thousands, Lebanon? You're a joke. You guys want to boycott companies like sodastream who give Arabs jobs... frikin Hypocrites:cuckoo:

A new bipartisan bill introduced Thursday in the House would strip all federal funds from any U.S. academic institution that decides to boycott Israel, according to a copy of the newly filed legislation obtained by the Free Beacon.

The introduction of the bill marks the first time that Congress has sought to level harsh economic penalties on federally funded universities that seek to boycott the Jewish state.

The bill comes just months after the American Studies Association (ASA) agreed to boycott Israeli academics and universities, prompting a fierce backlash from pro-Israel groups and others.

The “Protect Academic Freedom Act,” jointly filed by House Chief Deputy Whip Peter Roskam (R., Ill.) and Rep. Dan Lipinski (D., Ill.) could serve as a deterrent to other groups considering Israeli boycotts.

It would amend the Higher Education Act of 1965 “to prohibit an institution that participates in a boycott of Israeli academic institutions or scholars from being eligible” to receive federal funds, according to text of the legislation.

“Attempts to single out Israel for discriminatory boycotts violates the principle of academic freedom guaranteed by the United States,” the bill states.

nice in concept. i doubt it passes the first amendment test.

there are however things we can do, like not give government contracts to any company supporting such a vile boycott.

If we can be forced by draconian laws to boycott Evil Cuba, Dastardly Iran, and Diabolical North Korea, institutions should be able to divest from and boycott Israeli settlements without losing taxpayer funding.

That's if Freedom of Speech still has meaning in these United States.

Yeah?..We'll see, keep all options on the table. If it passes it'll haft to make its way through the courts anyway. Hopefully

Ok, Lebanon and the West Bank have a similiar unemployment rate.

But Jordan's is much lower.

I'd much rather live in Jordan than the Apartheid regime of the West Bank.

individuals can choose to buy or not, but schools and organizations that get any government or state funds cannot or can they fund groups that do advocate boycotting.
Cuba, Iran and N Korea are enemies of the US so no fund can be used to aid them. Israel is an ally and unless the US say otherwise, no state fund should be used in an attempt to harm them.

If schools and organizations think they can run on private fund alone and without scholarship, grant or student loans funds then let them try. I doubt they will get much support from the rest of the country if they did try. There has not been much backing by the populace for the boycott so far or these bills would not have been sponsored or passes their respective houses.

Boycott is basically saying palestinians should not have decent jobs because of who financed those jobs. Why are not more palestinians and arabs backing the creation of jobs for palestinians? Even palestinian start ups by women are rarely funded except by Israelis. Palestinian internet tech companies can't stay afloat without Israeli help. So where will the jobs come from? Olive trees planted by a handful of families? That will barely proved for a few dozen, not all those required to pick and process the olives each year. How many do you think a hundred bottles of olive oil, wholesale, will house and feed for a year? Companies like sodastream are trying to forge bonds between Israel and the palestinians, bonds that lead to peace and prosperity.
