The various German government organizations had their various mailboxes, or amt's .
The most commonly known amts are the various WAFFENAMTS that adorn every firearm that the Germans used in WWII.


They are also known as "proof marks" and a common one would be like that shown in the picture below. You will see an eagle (the State symbol) with a WaA and a number. That is the actual post office box number of the guy who inspected that magazine (in this particular case) and if there was a problem with that magazine the soldier could write a nasty letter to the inspector, address it with that WaA number, and voila, the nasty gram arrives in time for tea.
