I second this, but in my opinion, what you say here could very well go for just about everything on this planet. Everything is taken way too seriously regardless of how severe or how trivial things are.

I used to run HS track and those batons were about 2 in diameter and hollow. They were made of plastic or thin aluminum
We used to whack each other with those batons when playing around.
I don’t see how they could do that much damage.

Usually when running a relay and someone was cutting in too close, you started throwing elbows.
Never saw anyone use a baton

So many people on this forum have done so many things in so many fields of work and living. What that incident looked like was what would happen in the Star Trek evil universe.

We can debate all kinds of nonsense here but the only real question is, what should the attacker's punishment be? I would say a 6 month stay in a hard labor camp ought to do it.

I never said it was OK. They’re both wrong. They’re both trash. It was something that shouldn’t venture any further than the track meet and its officials. You’re not going to seriously injure anyone with those batons. They’re designed for speed and safety.

Not necessarily. Making a false claim like a whiplash claim is fraud.
Hitting someone with an innocent object is not always assault. That’s a stretch. These batons are very lightweight, almost as safe as children’s toys.
This is something that should be handled by track meet and scholastic sports officials.
