I was a ruffian back then, and my father had kicked me out of the house. $5.15/hr was enough for me to buy food, clothing and some entertainment while I lived on my own for the next 6 months.

Unlike you, I made do with less than $10 an hour. I still could. On $8.25/hr, I had amassed almost $1,100 bucks in the bank over a period of 5 months. That's with bills that I paid. You teach someone the value of saving their money, they wouldn't need to demand higher wages! Teach these people something more useful than being dependent, I assure you I speak from experience.
