You have undoubtedly heard the age-old saying, "money makes the world go 'round." In my opinion, that statement is false; heresy is the metaphorical driving force that makes the world spin. Since the dawn of humanity, religious zealots and the simple-minded have always pushed for a limited worldview that forced facts to fit theories and conform to their point of view. Likewise, it has always been the heretics, the outcasts, the freaks who have made the greatest positive impact on humanity.

Notable instances of challenging the old way of thought: Hippocrates claiming that diseases were not caused by demons, curses, spirits, or the like, Galileo opposing the Catholic Church and (correctly) proving that the Earth was not the center of the universe, and even people like the Wright Brothers who worked on building their plane even when everyone ridiculed them over it and called them crazy.

Lets take a look at what these three specific examples I listed ended up causing: Hippocrates made such grand contributions to medicine that even today doctors take the Hippocratic Oath, Galileo was excommunicated by the Church for disagreeing with them (no surprise there), but even the Catholic Church relented eventually and admitted he had been right, and the Wright Brothers are often credited as being the first people to construct and fly a working airplane.

Another important thing that contributed to our modern society were the scientists of the Renaissance, who developed the Scientific Process and began to fit theories to fit facts, not the other way around. This helped to open the gateway for the rapid progression of technology that culminated in today's world.

So just a thought, maybe heretics and lunatics are the ones who know what they're doing, not the "sane" and conformist people.
