Welcome, what's your experience with your health care in Germany?? I would be interested to hear about it.
Hello Maple,
thanks for a warm welcome.
To answer your question, I plainly prefer our health care system to the one in the US (or in the UK).
Two reasons:
1. We as a family have one big concern not, a lot of US families have:
Will the insurance cover a serious illness of one of my childs ?
2, If I see what has to be spent for a decent insurance in the US and what I get here for a lesser amount of money, I prefer ours.
Only: for the most people from the US our system is communism, therefore bad.
To go a little bit into details:
The system we now have in Germany was introduced about 1880 by Otto von Bismarck (definitely
not a socialist).
At the moment we have a two tier system of public insurances and private insurances.
Nearly every german has a health insurance. Every employee has one. If yor income is above a certain amount you can opt out of the system and get a private insurance.
Or as an entrepreneur you can choose not to have one at all (which can become very very expensive in case of an illness).
To give you an idea about the costs, my familiy is a good example.
My wife owns a small business, I am employed.
I pay 9 % of my wage to a private, non-profit insurance, further 8 % my employer adds.
The public insurances are controlled by the government, but not owned or run by any public service.
The doctor´s self-organisation and the public insurances decide on a yearly base how the money is spend.
With that my three children are covered as well without further costs.
My wife pays approx. 9-11 % of her average income for an insurance.
We therefore spend for five persons about 9 % of our total income for a health insurance.
This insurance covers about every medical treatment there is, even a shrink if I need one.
What my wife gets for her private insurance and I for my public one is practically the same.
My son needed brain surgery when he was two and afterwards a more than two-year long treatment - all this was covered by my insurance without any question.
Therefore, if you ask me, I will ever chose our current system.
But as I know from some visits, most Americans would prefer to keep the money and pay their own insurance. But just keep in mind, that nearly all germans pay into the system and therefore form a community of solidarity.
Our clinics and doctors are equal to the ones in the US, so I would any time try to keep our system.
It has it´s flaws and problems, but in general it works.
Regards
the german guy
P.S.
We definitely pay less than 60 % tax. The maximum tax for a very high income is some 45 %. Still pretty high ? But then see our infrastructure and the one in the US.
