Has Elon Musk gone off the deep end?

I have seen in the news recently that Elon Musk want's to send a sort of "Noah's Arc" to mars. That is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Mars only has gravity that is 38% that of earth. Nothing that evolved in earth's gravity is likely to do well in mars gravity. (If survive long at all) Take humans. Here on earth many exercise to stay fit. That would be nearly impossible to do when the gravity is less than half that of earth. And what if humans did adapt to living in mars gravity. They would never be able to return to earth. Also, mars has nearly nothing in the way of an atmosphere or magnetic field. That means anybody living there would be bombarded by all sorts of cosmic radiation. That would be even worse than the low gravity.

Here is the main point. Why would he even want to attempt it. Because it's there? That'a a pretty poor reason. Visiting the place is one thing. But living there is a whole different can of worms. Also, would he want to attempt it as a way of seeing that humans survive on a different planet in case something catastrophic happens to humans on earth? That's a pretty stupid reason too. The very worst place on earth is FAR better than the best place to be found elsewhere in the solar system. If human survival is his goal, his money would be far better spent by building some self sustaining colony in some remote part of the earth. With most of it underground. Also, in case something unforeseen popped up, the colony wouldn't have to go far for supplies.

Lastly, what Elon Musk wants to do seems a lot like when Hernan Cortes ordered that most of his ships be burned. Forcing his soldiers to either conquer or die. Because with mars being so far away, just getting there wouldn't be very easy. Returning wouldn't be any easier.

Your reasoning is sound. Maybe he has bought into his own rhetoric and believes he is a visionary and believes any idea he farts out is a great idea. Or maybe it's motivated by greed and he believes he can convince governments to underwrite his folly. But regardless of the reason, you have clearly shown man's best chance for continued survival is to remain on this planet and take his chances here. Pretty sure deca-billionaires already have their just in case bunkers ready and waiting. So I would suspect their actions prove they agree with you.

He's on the Spectrum.

Agreed as well. Its not a place for humans. they would do better living in a bubble under the ocean here on earth. That however doesnt mean the planet shouldnt be explored it might possibly have some valuable minerals or metals that we could use here on earth, or who knows what else but I think its a job better left to more advanced Artificial Intelligence that can operate without stress and depression under harsh conditions.
The one positive of his endeavor however is that pushing our boundaries in space creates new invention along the way. He doesnt need to be totally discounted.

Or just fire several accountants, deliberately pay more of his share in taxes so NASA can get back to handling space exploration, and start actually giving that ridiculous excess away to all high school kids demonstrating interest in science and innovation.

Mars isn't habitable, and never will be. It only LOOKS like Arizona

Musk says he became interested in flying to Mars to save humanity from an environmental catastrophe.
We all saw how it will be saved in the movie "2012". Only the rich, their property and the most loyal servants will be saved. And then they themselves will die there, because they can't do anything without workers.

Realistically, a base on the moon would need to be established to then get sufficient fuel and supplies built up. Maybe even construct a spacecraft. Then head onto Mars.

But anyone wanting to live on the closest potentially habitable planet, would need to travel 14 light years (82,300,755,224,570.39 miles) to get to it. So maybe another priority would be to work on a viable propulsion system.

Hope Musk doesn't think Lithium Ion batteries and his roof solar panels would power a spacecraft!!

He doesn't need to be totally discounted.

Yes he does. Heavy equipment to haul there, oxygen it burns irreversibly, millions of tons of equipment and supplies and a meteor strikes your glass house and goodbye everyone.
Clearly impossible, patently absurd.

SpaceX Brings 4 Astronauts Back to Earth After 6-Month Stint on International Space Station

...
A four-member team of astronauts launched to the International Space Station by SpaceX touched back down on Earth in the Gulf of Mexico on May 6.

The return via a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule came just one day after the group undocked from the space station following a six-month mission in which they conducted science experiments and did maintenance.

Dragon and Crew-3 astronauts consisted of Raja Chari, a U.S. Air Force combat jet and test pilot who served as mission commander, Tom Marshburn, a medical doctor and former NASA flight surgeon, Kayla Barron, a U.S. Navy submarine officer and nuclear engineer, and Matthias Maurer, a European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut and materials science engineer.

They returned to Earth and splashed down off the coast of Florida at 12:43 a.m. ET on Friday. NASA expected to have them back in Houston later in the morning.

“On behalf of the entire SpaceX team, welcome home … It’s been an absolute honor to support you on this mission, Endurance Crew, and thanks for flying SpaceX,” space officials said over SpaceX’s livestream.
...
They embraced the seven astronauts remaining at the station—Crew 4 commander Kjell Lindgren, pilot Bob Hines, Jessica Watkins, and European Space Agency astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti; and three Russian cosmonauts, Oleg Artemyev, Denis Matveev, and Sergey Korsakov—before parting ways.

Those replacement astronauts, from the United States and Italy, were taken up to space last week after completing a charter trip to the station for a trio of businessmen.

SpaceX was founded in 2002 by billionaire Elon Musk whose proposal to purchase Twitter for $44 billion was recently accepted by the social media platform’s board of directors.

I am given to remember (not that long ago) of many grandiose plans and proposals to colonize the Moon...way more inhospitable than Mars. And if not Mars, where? Europa? Triton? Ganymede? Titan? Possibles outside the solar system are out of reach. Given the proliferation of nukes, an 'Ark' does not seem that stupid to me.

Your scientific acumen is as seriously limited as Musk's.

Meteors strike planets, including Mars, every day. One smash into your glass house and your air will all be gone. The amount of material and number of space ships to send all of it to your dream home of Mars is hopelessly beyond our capacity to produce, particularly when so many of our resources are being squandered on Leftist favorites, from subsidizing "Green" crap, to "art" to paying for transgenders to brainwash small children in school.
