Hail Colombus

The majority of population loss occurred before Colombus death. 8 million as the original population was an exaggeration but it's unknown by how much. What is know is that there were fewer than 100 thousand after Colombus left for the last time in 1502.

I wouldn't say Colombus committed any genocide, but I don't think he should have a holiday.

There were a lot less than 8 million before he got there the first time. In fact, the Tainos were being driven steadily northeast by the Caribs. But, please, feel free to blame Columbus for something that started before he was born.

In that case, it's lucky for the Tainos that Columbus came along.
It sounds like he saved them from barbaric slaughter by the Carib savages and gave them righteous slaughter by decent god-fearing civilised people.

Funny, I don't recall saying that, is your innate racism surfacing again?

I can't be bothered arguing the legitimacy of scholars with you...do your own research and pick your own source.
The basic facts are still the same.

Is that because you cited a "scholar" with no legitimacy? Why was he fired by the University of Colorado again? Was it something about plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, and academic misconduct? Wasn't there something in there about him being disrespectful of Indian oral traditions?

Or did that not turn up in your research?

Lol. Ward f---ing Churchill....precious

Like I said, the basic facts are there.
Have a look for yourself.

Yes you did.
Please feel free to quote examples of my 'innate racism'.

In 1493 Columbus returned with an invasion force of
seventeen ships, appointed at his own request by the Spanish Crown to
install himself as "viceroy and governor of [the Caribbean islands]
and the mainland" of America, a position he held until
1500.

The tribute system, instituted by the Governor sometime in 1495, was a
simple and brutal way of fulfilling the Spanish lust for gold while
acknowledging the Spanish distaste for labor. Every Taino over the age
of fourteen had to supply the rulers with a hawk's bell of gold every
three months (or in gold-deficient areas, twenty-five pounds of spun
cotton); those who did were given a token to wear around their necks
as proof that they had made their payment; those who did not were, as
[Columbus's brother, Fernando] says discreetly "punished"-by having
their hands cut off, as [the priest, BartolomÂŽ de] las Casas says
less discreetly, and left to bleed to death.

Ward Churchill?

The guy who called all the people killed in the World Trade Center "Little Eichmanns" is your reference.....

You are probably going to need to do better than that...chuckle

Keep bitching but YOU"RE NEVER going to remove 300 million non-natives.
Keep bitching but all races, cultures and peoples did and would do the same damn thing.

The natives even slaughtered other tribes. When do we get over the bitching???

9.11 - Columbus' History of Genocide

The "tribute system" described by Ward Churchill (LOL) was instituted in retaliation for the attack on the settlement La Navidad which had been established during the 1st voyage, leaving 1/4th of the settlers killed and the fort destroyed. I was a simple and brutal way of insuring that an isolated an outmanned garrison would intimidate the native population so as to prevent future attacks. Churchill's reliance upon this incident to establish "genocide" without disclosing the underlying circumstances demonstrates his prejudice. Such a system while cruel and criminal by todays standards can hardly be termed "genocide". Want to try again?

The 17 ships in Columbus' 2nd voyage?

The fleet of 17 ships carrying 1,200 men and the supplies to establish permanent colonies in the New World. The passengers included priests, farmers, and soldiers, who would be the new colonists. This reflected the new policy of creating not just "colonies of exploitation", but also "colonies of settlement" from which to launch missions dedicated to converting the natives to Christianity

The 2nd Voyage was active in the Americas from November 1493 to August of 1494 during which time Columbus was involved primarily in exploration and established an additional colony. He returned to Spain and remained there until 1498 when he embarked on his 3rd voyage. His 3rd voyage was also primarily one of exploration but is noted for his run in not with the natives, but with the colonists who revolted from his rule. This resulted in his arrest in Spain in 1500 where he was stripped of his governorship which he never regained again.

Claims of genocide by Columbus are patently absurd.
