Hail Colombus

He was a slaver who was cruel to his property. But so were a lot of people back then.

He brought the west to the new world, which is a big deal I suppose, but he doesn't deserve a holiday.

I agree he was a "slaver" as were others. He also killed some natives in retaliation to attack on the La Navidad settlement and certain other events such as the occurrence at the Bay of Arrows... however, none of that should be confused with "genocide".

So let me get this straight.
200 million whites shouldn't be here
40 million blacks
and most of central America/south America shouldn't be meso's(mixture of white).

Somehow 1/3rd of the entire ******* world should only be for the natives.

Well technically in the 10 years he visited the new world the Taino people were reduced from upwards of 8 million to less than 100 thousand. But that could have been sparked by the La Navidad settlement where the natives murdered 39 people.

In abstract, a place should be for the natives, but that is not the way the world works.

Our school district's history teachers were careful to give a balanced view of Columbus and the European penetration and subsequent events in the Americas.

That is incorrect. The estimates provided by Bartolomé de Las Casas is considered a gross exaggeration. The Taino population was drastically reduced but this occurred primarily after 1519 and was due to pandemics. Columbus died in 1506. If you wish to say Cortez or Pizarro were guilty of genocide I would not disagree but no such assertion is justified for Columbus.

The majority of population loss occurred before Colombus death. 8 million as the original population was an exaggeration but it's unknown by how much. What is know is that there were fewer than 100 thousand after Colombus left for the last time in 1502.

I wouldn't say Colombus committed any genocide, but I don't think he should have a holiday.

In 1493 Columbus returned with an invasion force of
seventeen ships, appointed at his own request by the Spanish Crown to
install himself as "viceroy and governor of [the Caribbean islands]
and the mainland" of America, a position he held until
1500.
.......................................
The tribute system, instituted by the Governor sometime in 1495, was a
simple and brutal way of fulfilling the Spanish lust for gold while
acknowledging the Spanish distaste for labor. Every Taino over the age
of fourteen had to supply the rulers with a hawk's bell of gold every
three months (or in gold-deficient areas, twenty-five pounds of spun
cotton); those who did were given a token to wear around their necks
as proof that they had made their payment; those who did not were, as
[Columbus's brother, Fernando] says discreetly "punished"-by having
their hands cut off, as [the priest, BartolomÂŽ de] las Casas says
less discreetly, and left to bleed to death.

There were 8 million Tainos? Even after the Caribs were fighting with them for years, and had all but eliminated them? Are you trying to blame Columbus for things that happened before he ever got lost?

There were a lot less than 8 million before he got there the first time. In fact, the Tainos were being driven steadily northeast by the Caribs. But, please, feel free to blame Columbus for something that started before he was born.

In that case, it's lucky for the Tainos that Columbus came along.
It sounds like he saved them from barbaric slaughter by the Carib savages and gave them righteous slaughter by decent god-fearing civilised people.

I can't be bothered arguing the legitimacy of scholars with you...do your own research and pick your own source.
The basic facts are still the same.

One can only hope for Howard Zinns and Noam Chomskys scholarly opinions......for the kiddies
