Regardless of whether you believe in "God," life must be lived as though actions have consequences, even if those consequences are shielded from us and occur after death. Otherwise, life would unfathomably unjust.

The six or seven Commandments having nothing to do with "God" are a good starting point. Add the lesson of the Good Samaritan: Recognize that every living soul should be treated with respect, consideration, kindness, and compassion - even if you don't like them.

Then you can think of your self as passably good.

God wrote the 10 commandments on a tablet, not the 10 and not the 10 penalties for not abiding by them.

Why?

Two tablets, one for Israel's relationship with God and parents, the other Israel's relationship with neighbor. They were written on tablets of stone, signifying the "stoney heart" of the Israelites, who would only obey out of fear.

The commandments, judgments, and statutes, the LAW, was intended only for Israel, not the rest of the world. And would only be in force (enforced) while Israel remained a nation. The Jews in Jesus day were that last vestige of the nation of Israel. When they ceased to be a nation the LAW ceased as well.

The law was given as 'a light to the nations', which means they're for everyone, even unbelievers.

Most of the law is not about doing anything difficult, its about not saying or doing stupid things because it will fuck up your mind, distort your perceptions, and pervert your experience of life.

How hard is that?
