the kaiser was said to have had little esteem for the American character. He considered Americans to be “a loose, happy-go-lucky people ... as foolish republicans must be; and next, (Wilhelm) knew that he had the most powerful army in the world, which, if put to the test, would crush the undisciplined American militia at the first onset.”

According to the May 8, 2002 article, a fleet of German warships would land tens of thousands of troops at various locations along the U.S. east coast, including our own Sandy Hook, where Fort Hancock was to be neutralized.

Destroying the garrison at Sandy Hook was considered the first step to penetrating New York City’s defenses, along with Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn and Fort Tompkins on Staten Island. Two or three infantry battalions, and one battalion of combat engineers, were estimated to be needed to capture Sandy Hook, after warships had laid waste to Fort Hancock from the sea, according to the article in Die Zeit.

Once in New York Bay, warships would shell Manhattan, after which Germany expected America to surrender.

Those wacky Germans. A brilliant people, but prone to overreaching.

They thought we would surrender because they shelled NY?

Its the continental mindset. Anything outside of Europe was seen as backwater, and subject to the same rules they applied to their colonial possessions, i.e. we smack em around a bit and they will give up.

Considering the strongest part of our military at the time was the navy, I don't see any long term operations by the Imperial German fleet as feasible.

Of course we are dealing with Prussians here, and Prussians plan for everything. They probably had a plan to invade the moon in a file somewhere.

no. the aim was to force the USA to negotiate regarding establishing bases/grabbing colonies in the atlantic and pacific.

german navy officers (and of course the Kaiser) were pissed because it (the navy) was tiny, because of the samoan crisis and because of being too late to grab bases on the philippines.

german army officers said plan was ridiculous. and it got shelved.

They would have had a better shot at that.

True, they came from a continent that was baffled and is till baffled by a 30 mile wide stretch of ocean, and yet they thought they could invade over the entire Atlantic.

Whether or not Kaiser Wilhelm understood Americans or not, that is arguable... But he sure as hell misread Europeans and the Russians. Which might be why Germany lost BOTH World war one and world war 1, part II. And badly, at that. Well, where do ya go with that?

You gotta be talking about WW1 right? The German army might have taken France if it wasn't for the US Marines but surely nobody thinks that Germany had intentions of invading the US in freaking 1918.

 I believe we have a better chance of being invaded by Martians from Mars.
Even now many Europeans cannot begin to grasp the sheer size of this place.
Little wonder his army shelved this nonsense. They had beaten the Russians and the war in the west had been fought to a stand still. No way would they have approved weakening their positions in the low countries and France for such a silly adventure.

The U.S. Military has contingency plans to invade Russia, China and even Mexico.

Was this story supposed to prove something?
