PRINCETON, NJ -- The increased conservatism that Gallup first identified among Americans last June persisted throughout the year, so that the final year-end political ideology figures confirm Gallup's initial reporting: conservatives (40%) outnumbered both moderates (36%) and liberals (21%) across the nation in 2009.

The problem with their poll is the main question. They ask how you would describe your political views? In some areas, I would call myself a conservative, in others a liberal. Personally I don't see any view point as moderate. I may be a fiscal conservative, but if a conservative candidate were against a woman's right to choice, I certainly wouldn't vote for them.

It will be interesting to see how the 2010 votes fall, but I don't think this poll will reflect on the results. I see the 2010 election being very anti-encumbant.

If you go to the Gallup link, the graph showing under "Detailed Political Ideology Findings - 2000 - 2009, it clearly shows that the ultra conservatives (the ones making the most noise these days) haven't gained much traction at all.

And it still remains that the Republican Party is even less popular than the Democrats in poll after poll.

So it may well come down to who the conservatives prefer in '10. Those that decided to give Obama the chance may not be quite so enthusiastic to hand congress to the democrats this time. Never hatchet your counts before they chicken.

I fail to understand how the hell anyone can decide what a 'true independent' will or will not vote for. Independents are actually individuals, even if liberals are not.
