Authorities busted a man who was plotting to assassinate French President Emmanuel Macron on Bastille Day during President Trump’s visit to the country, a spokeswoman for the Paris prosecutor’s office said Monday.
She said the 23-year-old man hoped to attack Macron on July 14, during an parade on the Champs-Élysées in Paris, where Trump is expected to be a guest of honor, CNN reported.
The suspect was nabbed on Wednesday in the Paris suburb of Argenteuil by anti-terror cops and was charged with “individual terrorist activity.”
The self-described far-right nationalist told cops he wanted to make a political statement by killing the French president, CNN affiliate BFMTV reported.
He also wanted to attack “blacks, Arabs, Jews and homosexuals,” according to police documents seen by the network.
Video gamers blew the whistle on the nutcase after he posted on a game site that he wanted to buy a Kalashnikov-type assault rifle, BFMTV said.
The suspect was convicted of terror-related activity in 2016, according to France Info.
Last year, 86 people were killed in a truck attack during Bastille Day festivities in Nice, France.
Macron said Monday he would lift the state of emergency imposed on the country since November 2015 later this year.
