There was no social welfare state. The Statue of Liberty is not about immigration. It is about freedom. Ellis Island was immigration. We are talking illegals in huge numbers today. There were many values. Having a sponsor here in this country. Documented paperwork. Checked for health issues. The ability to learn and speak English.
The people that came here wanted to be Americans. They waved our flag. They were not given get out of jail free cards, or credit cards worth thousands. See that line up there? No one was given a free luxury hotel to live in. No free medical cards, no free universities, no driver's license and if they wanted to vote they had to show their citizenship papers.

What we have now is not immigration, it is an invasion that circumvents all of our immigration laws.
