While I completely agree with what you said about Trump and how politics and religion being so intertwined has caused great harm to the church, the founders never intended on a separation.

George Washington made sure he was sworn in on the Bible. The first thing Congress did was open with prayer.

Jefferson mentioned the separation when he noted the Federal government could do nothing about official state religions (at that time).
