Prior to entering the EEC (now called the EU), the UK was going bankrupt. The UK begged to join the EEC and only support from Italy and Germany convinced France to not veto UK's entry. It will return to what it was before it joined after it leaves.
Let's not get too carried away.
At the time, the UK didn't realize what a disaster would happen after the formation of the EU and felt it was in its best economic interest to join up.
The only reason the UK was economically in a bad way was because of the WW2, so it's ridiculous to say it will return to that state.
The UK certainly won't suffer from leaving the EU, with all its dictatorial style and with public servants in Brussels telling all the countries what to do, all the contrary!
Well done Britain!
The other members of the EEC also went through WW2 and all were far more damaged than Britain, yet they were in much better shape than the UK. I was a military dependent at a DOD (U.S. military) high school in France in the mid 60s and we would travel to the UK to play the American high schools at (Lakenheath, London Central and Upper Heyford) in sports. Going to the UK from France was like going to a third world country. The British economy profited substantially from EEC/EU membership.
Britain will certainly suffer from leaving the EU. Few manufacturing companies with exports to the EU will remain in the UK without the unfettered access they now have. British services, especially financial services and insurance, companies will relocate a major part of their business activity within the EU to have access to the 450 million people of the EU. So you are only kidding yourself.
Plus, it is likely that Scotland will leave the UK to join the EU and Northern Ireland may find it necessary to unite with the Republic of Ireland to maintain its trade with the Republic.
In short, 52% of the British people were very, very stupid.
After WW2 the Marshall Plan was introduced to rebuild war devastated Europe.Germany for example was able to build modern factories etc....
Since Brexit was announced, Britain's economy in fact has grown and London will probably remain the financial heart of the world.
Britain is also negotiating with twelve other countries regarding trade deals and the EU needs UK trade just as much the UK does. Also it may be able to trade favorably with the EU as - for instance - Norway does outside the bloc .
Despite all the noise about Scotland etc,,, leaving the UK this is very doubtful but even if it happens it would be a good for the UK as Scotland is a financial liability
Don't agree with your assumptions at all .....the UK will keep on growing and the 52% mainly voted against the immigrant invasion which is very sensible thing to do.
The UK was the biggest European recipient of Marshall Fund aid. The UK received more than a third more than Germany
" Britain actually received more than a third more Marshall Aid than West Germany - $2.7 billion as against $1.7 billion. She in fact pocketed the largest share of any European nation. ..............It was this victor's psychology that deluded both Labour and Conservative politicians into believing that Britain - at the centre of the Commonwealth and the Sterling area - could have a future that was similar to her past. British politicians saw the United Kingdom as a first-class power in the same league as the United States. "
BBC - History - British History in depth: The Wasting of Britain's Marshall Aid
The EU has no interest in manufacturing plants remaining in the UK once the UK leaves the union, so obviously the EU will not give the UK the same benefits as it had as a member of the EU. Those plants moving to EU states is a vital EU interest so there is no reason for the EU to give the UK special benefits.
Norway (as well as other countries) trades as an EU member state because it accepts all EU laws and regulations and adheres to the four EU freedoms (free
movement of goods, capital, services, and people), while not having a say in EU legislation and regulations.
The same goes with financial and insurance services. The EU is not interested in London being the financial center for the EU now that the UK has left the EU. Various EU cities will assume the role as financial centers for the EU. Why would the EU relinquish that role to a non-EU state?
As far as Scotland and NI, I suspect that when it becomes apparent that they could inherit at least some of the business that will leave the UK, they will leave the UK.
As far as immigration, EU citizens (mostly Poles) that went to the UK under the free movement of people for work are a small part of the influx of people to the UK. The overwhelming majority of the influx to the UK are immigrants from the third world, which the EU had nothing to do with as they are not part of the "free movement of people" which only applies to Europeans of states that are members of the EU. There are about 2.1 million EU citizens (non-UK) living in the UK, but, there are 1.3 million UK citizens living in the EU outside of the UK.
What will Brexit mean for British expats?
Brexit was a very stupid move by the English and Welsh. It's a repeat of the post WW-2 delusion of grandeur that caused the UK to almost go bankrupt until saved by the EEC/EU.
