Food you have never tried but wonder if you might have missed something

Sardines. I read an artixle about tinned sardines and started thinking about it. Ive alwaus avoided them. Oily little fish with the bones still in them. Never fancied them. But I might be persuaded.

Bagels is another one. They just havent been part of my culture. They look like a bread roll with a hole in the middle. I cant see the attraction but im willing to try if its worth my while.

What things have you missed that you might like to try ?

Bagels are made by wizards

when I was young I drove a seafood truck in Manhattan and had to meat a driver from Delaware for some crabs and I saw he was eating something and asked what it was he was eating and he showed me a plain bagel and said "nothing this doughnut is terrible"...lol
Actually I really like those plain bagels with raisins in them. Well I guess technically this makes them not plain anymore but anyway, they have a really nice aroma to them. A mixture of flour and fruit. Fruity smell mmm.

truth be told I have never had a bagel I didn't like but my favorite is poppy seed.

/----/ Unless you're in New York City or Nassau County, don't bother trying one. You'll be disappointed. Most bagels available are just white bread made to look like a bagel.

I live right over the border in suffolk, Copiague/Amityville
/---/ The secret to the best bagels is the water. NYC has perfect water for not only bagels but also pizza. I'm on KETO and miss my comfort food, including a fresh cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese.

Why do Europeans dislike the quality of American food?

OK, I’m North American, but have been spending part of the last three summers in various parts of Europe.

Why do they dislike it?

Because it’s mediocre.

It’s the lowest common denominator of ingredients meeting people who don’t know how to (or want to) shop any better.

American groceries are designed to last; European groceries are meant to be eaten right away.

I think that, despite the public image of us, we hate to shop, at least for groceries.

WE want to go to Costco once a week or every two weeks, get the 24 pak of toilet paper and Kraft Dinner, the BOGO special on 2 liter bottles of Mountain Dew or Coke…the 72 pak of Twinkies….fill up our fridges and freezers (yes, multiple freezers and fridges) and be done with it (Mostly, because it’s a crowded annoying hassle to shop)

In Europe, we stopped off at the Boulangerie, got A loaf of good bread that would be eatten that meal or have a couple pieces left for breakfast, went to the Fromagerie and got cheese, maybe some sliced meat or a piece of chicken and some salad….

And you did that almost every day….

And you got to know your local shopkeepers.

It’s just more civilized…

/----/ Packed in oil, water, or spicy?
I like sardines as a high-protein snack, but not when I wake up.

In oil, in a tin.

Why are you shocked? Other times l’ll eat poached egg on toast with smoked salmon. I can get that in American eateries.

I tried a pop tart once. Cardboard in a toaster. o_O

/------/ I like smoked salmon, cream cheese, sliced onion, and capers on a half bagel. I tried a poptart 50 years ago. Never tried one again.

This thread reminded me of this video.

Not Tommy Tainant's ignorant deprivation from a life spent in a place where only white European people are allowed, but more about the culture shock of American grocery stores.

Yes but, you have strange things like green cake. And weird things in tins. And those chicken feet that look like dismembered hands. Although those are appearing in the Chinese shops over here in Europe.

I do like your steaks though.
