Food Stamps: Just say no to sugary soda

will this measure save the gvt any money?

the answer is NO....

and since the answer is NO, then why is it any of our business on what someone else drinks?

No one is telling them what to eat and drink. It is changing what is covered. If they want soda they are more them free to purchase it with cash.

:lol::lol::lol:

gawd, you have a lot of balls to post that spin and then come back here.:lol::lol:

They are telling them they cannot eat the food and drink paid for with the funds. If the funds are all they have for food.... :cuckoo:

Of course they can always beg for soda.

MOST also seem to have enough disposable cash for,

cell phones
cable
cigarettes
alcohol and beer
designer clothes and hand bags

Aslo if food stamps are all the funds they have for food, they can start to use the words. 'Sorry I cant afford soda, THIS is what i can afford'.

What they are saying is that food stamps will no longer cover certain items. That is very different then saying they can not have them.

buying soda for hungry people is just as stupid as buying viagra for pedophiles. innit? stupid stupid stupid.

Where do you live that people on food stamps get CASH?

People on this kind of assistance do not get cash, they do not get a check, they don't even get "food stamps." They get a little card that looks/works like a credit/debit card with a preset limit that they can use to buy food. This keeps the cashier from being able to give change in cash that would then allow them to go out with that change and buy things that are already not allowed with "food stamps."

You see, even though you claim that people on food stamps are allowed to purchase whatever they want, you are wrong. They cannot for instance go out and buy cigarettes or alcohol with their food stamp card. And yes, there are other things that are not allowed.

Rick

Hey Rick, the cardholder goes to a store and works with the cashier to charge up more on the card than they actually purchase. Then the cashier returns a percentage of the difference in cash. Cash is converted to cigarettes and beer.

You sound rather entitled, Paulie.

It's a program I'm ok with, tox.

I'll agree with anyone though, that it needs MAJOR reform. And the reform it needs isn't what people can and can't buy. It's how the money is handed out, who it's handed out to, and who is ultimately benefiting from it.

I've said all along that I'd prefer the government ration actual food that it produces instead of handing out CASH.

But as long as it's going to be cash, which ultimately lines the pockets of Big Food, then I'm ok with people eating whatever.

I don't know if this universal, but at least in NY, food stamp (EBT) cards won't work for anything other than grocery items - and won't pay for alcohol, tobacco, or prepared food. Most grocery store cash register POS systems do this automatically, ringing up ineligible items separately, which must be paid for separately.

Yeah I can totally see a parallel between hungry people and pedophiles. That's a picture perfect analogy there, mildred

If I've paid taxes all my life, and I end up in an unfortunate position where I now need food stamp benefits because I lost a job, then you will dictate my grocery list over my fucking dead body.

It's interesting that when you think of this issue, you focus on how YOU would feel if you were given food stamps and you were restricted in your choices...because of all the taxes you've paid in your life, you are entitled to have whatever you want to buy.

I think of it as with all the taxes that I currently pay, I don't want that money being used by a mother to purchase Pepsi to put into her toddler's sippy cup.

I don't feel that I should be punished in some way because someone else is irresponsible. I'm responsible with my spending and my diet. So yeah, you could say that because of that, and the fact that it's my tax dollars as well, I feel a bit entitled when it comes to this issue.

Why should we have to err on the side of not having nice things? I'm sure there are just as many responsible beneficiaries as irresponsible ones.
If you are responsible with your spending and your diet, then I would have to assume that you do not drink soda...therefore, not being able to purchase soda would not adversely effect you.

But along those same lines, if you did have a special occasion where you wanted to purchase a 2 liter bottle of Coke for a party...you would not be forbidden from purchasing it. Only you would have to round up a few dollars of your own money to purchase it.

I have absolutely no problem with this. And I don't see why you do.

And if this happens, it would be considered defrauding the government. Fines for the grocery store should be astronomical on the order of magnitude of $10,000+ per fraudulent charge.

It would prevent shit like this from happening.

a family with children, making up to $46k a year, I believe I've read, can qualify for food stamps, while a married couple of 2, without children, can only qualify for food stamp help, if they make less than a combined income of $14k a year unless you are a senior citizen.

I believe this tells you that foodstamps are meant to feed the CHILDREN and SENIORS, not necessarily all of the "poor".

What does what they "are meant" to do have to do with anything?
Fact is 40% of the food "sold" by grocers under this card are resold or traded.Better than the 50% when the stamp were sold on the open market and then cashedin by retailers who could care less.
The food card program has very little to dowth feeding the poor. The grocery chain lobby wrote the damn bill.

Link please

I investigated the fraud for many years.
Why do you think they changed the delivery system and how come they do it through the grocery stores instead of another, and much cheaper than RETAIL, system?

Fine the store for something the cashier does? If it happens? You live stateside?

Of course.

I'm a physician. If my staff blatantly fucks up, I get sued.

If the staff in the hospital blatantly fucks up, the hospital gets sued.

The employees don't get sued. They get fired.

Food stamps are not a right but a privilege. You do not earn Food stamps they are given to you. If my taxes are paying for your food then it damned well should be food.

Shut the fuck up..

A lot of people who receive food stamps also PAY TAXES.

Wow. I am not saying that you are lying or that you are incorrect, but I find this statement hard to believe. Can someone earn enough to pay federal income tax and, at the same time, be poor enough to qualify for food stamps? Please educate me on this.

pajesus though....

we had soda pop avail when i was a kid and nobody was all upset about it, trying to tell us we can or can't drink it....

the only one telling my sis and me that, was my mom.....mom decided when she was gonna let us girls have a soft drink....and maybe once a month, she allowed us to have one....

the whole thing is bullcrapola babysitting by our gvt....imo.

If they do not like the rules then they can find another way to get food.
If you have your hand out your mouth needs to remain SHUT.
The problem these days is people do not know how to act.

The tickets were just in lieu of actual cash. It was fundamentally the same as using a card. It's just on a card now because that's where we've progressed in technology.

I said "actual food that the government produces".

our government actually pays farmers to NOT grow food instead....

just crazy!

Yeah, and then hands us out cash on a debit card to go buy food so that grocery chains can line their pockets with the expenditures.

But we're sitting here arguing about fucking SODA

oh, it ain't just for the grocery stores....the banks get money off of issuing the debit cards, I think I had read, as well.

I know Paul...it is absolutely ridiculous that people are arguing for more gvt babysitting and control over our lives.

soda's were abundant when I grew up and we all were not obese back then....

Bet ya computers, and mom's having to work to make ends meet, and all the tv coverage of pedophiles keeps children from actually getting off their buns and physically playing outside....

it keeps adults less active as well

so I guess we should just have our government put a BAN ON COMPUTERS and the internet. :cuckoo:

Well Doc, your referring to a lawsuit and the situation you are talking about is criminal law. As a general rule, you arrest and prosecute the party who did the act.

If I had my way, the only LIQUID that food stamps would be able to buy would be milk and orange juice.
Skim, lowfat or whole? Organic or non-organic? Florida orange juice or California orange juice?

How about chocolate milk? Milk in plastic containers or only wax cartons?

If it weren't for chocolate milk, my youngest would have rickets.

Actually, we're arguing for LESS government control, i.e., reducing options for those on the dole, which makes it a little less cushy and will result in welfare food dollars going much, much further. It's really about pulling back the hand of the government. The government doesn't exist to feed people. That isn't the role of government. It exists to protect people. That's it.

But if you're going to have these programs then make them realistic, and adjust them so they at least can pretend to be something other than an incentive for people to sit on their asses, eat chips and guzzle soda.
