Florist Sued for Refusing Service to Gay Couple Pens Defiant Letter Rejecting Gov’t Settlement Offer

I have a mechanic that does that. He had so much trouble with black customers that he just decided it wasn't worth his time to fight with them any more. He sold his shop and rents it back by the hour. He does no advertising, has no business license, is very choosy about what customers he takes on. He's always busy and has no more headaches.
Since what he is doing is illegal, I can't want to meet him.
It's not illegal. It is absolutely legal.
I very much doubt it. Sounds like midnight auto repair.

If income is reported and taxes are paid no one cares whether there is advertising or not.

Still doesn't erase 1st Amendment rights to daily exercise of one's core values.

Should be an interesting run before SCOTUS. Hobby Lobby comes to mind.

For various reasons private arrangement services are becoming more widespread. The muslim bakery in Westwood does the same thing. The stock answer is "just what's in the case."

Christians just have to get used to doing business the way others do. Not everything has to be on the menu. Especially artisans can't let everything they do hang out. We no longer have artistic freedom. It will taken a little getting used to.

Nothin' like a good sting operation, and a few audits of income and taxes paid. Lovely...

The SC already rejected a case just like this. She has nowhere to go.

Nope, but I bet sure as hell he does neither? He went underground and we love to find those guys.

Anyone who wants to preserve at least a little bit of freedom has to put part of their business underground. It's very common in communist countries. The more totalitarian the government the more the people avoid the oppression.

Yep, and it's also illegal, like your friend I bet? Sounds like you might not be so straight with the IRS either?

You are still making the same mistake in thinking that public accommodation laws act like a restraining order. They don't. The law doesn't say if you don't make wedding cakes and floral arrangements for gays you can't make them for anyone. That's a restraining order. Public accommodation laws say if you offer services to the public you can't discriminate. Public accommodation laws don't address goods or services that aren't offered.

I'm unusually straight with the IRS. Since most of my work is either through a gallery or competition I get 1099s.

Good on you. I wonder what your little greasy hands buddy does?

Why would you think everyone cheats on their taxes? Do you? Is that a little bit of projection there?

As far as I know he has to be pretty straight since he took traceable income like checks and credit cards. Or did you picture cash only under the table?

He does both, I'm sure. Most guys like that do.

Because he went underground, which means he cheats. They rarely pay up.

Only partly underground. He stopped advertising and no longer owns the auto repair shop. When you advertise, even if it's only a sign outside, that business is open to the public. Whatever the services are that's advertised has to be provided to whoever comes in.

Net result from this lawsuit against Christians is gays will continue to be discriminated against; they just won't be able to prove it.
Exactly. Christians will just limit what services are offered to the public while still performing those services by private arrangement.
And when they cheat, and lie, we will be more than happy to fine them, jail them, and take over their functions. Carry on.
Well you can't. If services aren't offered to the public they just aren't offered to the public. There's no restraining order preventing the baker or florist from baking cakes or making floral arrangements. If these services are offered to the public then gays as part of the public has to be served everything that's offered. Without the offer there is no obligation.

I went through this so I know. It's why I won while the florist and baker lost. The two lesbians that sued me could never prove that I offered anything to the public. They proved that I was an artist. They proved that I painted commissioned works. What they could not prove was that I offered anything to the public. So they lost.

I am untouchable. In time every Christian who wants it will be untouchable too.
I've touched on this before that Christians need to be more shrewd instead of looking for a hill to die on. For instance, if I had a bakery that offered customized wedding cakes and Butch and Dike want me to do a cake for their queer "wedding", I can say we're booked solid, supplies are on back order, we're no longer offering that service, or I'm suffering from arthritis and can't design the cake. Yeah, let's see them prove my hand doesn't hurt. The racists of the 1960's who didn't want to serve black customers found many creative ways not to do it. It's a tremendous irony that 50 years later, they have some valuable lessons to teach Christians today on how to get around stupid laws.

So you'd lie? How very moral. Be sure to mention that to Jesus.

Typical American Christian, lies like a rug.
