Actually...Leeches have been used non stop-----blood letting killed, but leeches used for sucking venous (return blood) from resewing on limbs and digits has been proven over and over. It takes a long time for veins to heal to the point where they can channel blood back to the lungs/heart----the leeches serve to eat the blood that pools in reattached fingers etc thusly providing a life saving service.

Now, shush or I will tell you about the medical benefits of FLY LARVAE in eating dead tissue-
