The US servicemen died in a plane crash in Queensland, writes Anne Davies in Washington.

IT WAS June 14, 1943, and 41 young Americans had just enjoyed a few days away from the steamy jungles of New Guinea at the US Army's rest and recreation facilities in Mackay, Queensland.
